Community Projects

ʻĀINA (LAND)

I am currently the President of Hoʻāla ʻĀina Kūpono, a non-profit based in Kahana, Oʻahu, whose mission is "to mālama ʻāina, mālama ʻohana, and hoʻoikaika pilina kānaka (care for the land, our families, and strengthen community relationships)" through advocacy, community-based economic development projects, cultural and sustainability education, and experiential learning.

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE CHILDREN LITERATURE

I am also an established Hawaiian language children literature author, having published books for the kindergarten through 3rd grade levels as well as for Hawaiian language ʻohana (families) with the Hale Kuamoʻo Hawaiian Language Center. Please see my CV for more.

HAWAIIAN THOUGHT

I currently have a project with the ʻAha Kāne Foundation researching hoʻoponopono. Focusing primarily on historical documents, this research project is looking at the practice of hoʻoponopono as demonstrated by 19th and 20th-century Hawaiian literature, archival documents, and oral histories.

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM

I am an experienced Hawaiian language curriculum developer. I have developed curriculum for the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Of particular notice is a curriculum project I have done with the ʻAha Pūnana Leo in which I developed instructional videos following Nā Kai ʻEwalu, a Hawaiian language textbook written by William H. Wilson and Kauanoe Kamanā, for families of the Pūnana Leo schools.

EXHIBIT WRITER AND DESIGNER

I am an experienced exhibit writer and designer for Hawaiian language content. I am currently working on a project with EDX Seattle designing for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. I have also worked with ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi translating exhibits from English to Hawaiian. 

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION

I am an avid Hawaiian language translator. I have demonstrated experience in translating from Hawaiian to English, English to Hawaiian, as well as interpretation. I am well-versed in historical and archival Hawaiian language materials, technical documents (legal, medical, etc.), as well as contemporary documents. I have collaborated with Hale Ulana, JN Productions, Ironman Hawai'i, Linguacious LLC, and Conservation International to name a few.

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE RESEARCH

I have also conducted research presentations for the community on Hawaiian language topics. In the past, I have collaborated with Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center to present on the development of Hawaiian literature children's literature, mele (poetry) as a form of cartography, Hawaiian language dictionaries, the genealogy of alphabetic Hawaiian literature, research in the Hawaiian language newspapers, research in land documents, as well as genealogy research. I have also collaborated with NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Association) on the revitalization and normalization of the Hawaiian language in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
